Support your neighbours this holiday season and don’t fall victim to the temptation of the big box sale.

By gift shopping locally, money is then poured back into the community, growing the region in all city sectors.

As part six of Kelowna Capital News’ shop local series, here’s a list of local gift options to avoid shopping international goods for similar pricing.

Little Acre Farms – The Feel Good Supplement

The Feel Good is the perfect gift for anyone looking for fewer aches and pains, better digestion, and more consistent natural energy.

Founded by local resident Chase Stevenson, Little Acre Farms was born from a personal need for a clean, gut healthy, energy inducing, anti-inflammatory supplement. Made from five whole food ingredients: beet root, ginger, turmeric, broccoli, and black pepper, it was created to tackle these issues for better living.

Together, Stevenson and his partner Matt Crowell have created a wellness brand rooted in simplicity, community, and real food. Their long term vision is to build a wellness space where people can work remotely, enjoy organic farm-grown food, and use recovery amenities such as ice baths and saunas while spending time with rescue animals and connecting with others.

“We have seen amazing results across all demographics, from professional athletes to busy parents, young professionals, and individuals just starting their health journey. The formula helps fill nutritional gaps most people miss in their everyday diet” said Stevenson.

They have recently launched a “Holiday Health Bundle” which includes a three month supply of The Feel Good at a discounted rate to promote New Year’s resolutions in fitness. Additional bundles for the holiday season will become available on their online shop linked below.

Those interested can visit the Little Arce Farms website.

Instead of one of the popular supplement stores, support a new, local, up-and-coming business.

Olive & Elle – Interior Design Gifts

Olive & Elle is a local home based boutique store located in Kelowna’s downtown.

Part of their mission statement is to provide ethical, elevated, and sustainable goods that reject fads and overconsumption. They have a variety of different gift ideas for inspired interior design lovers from soaps, candles, bedding, throws, plates, bowls, glassware, jewelry, clothing and more.

What stands out is their commitment to supporting local and Canadian made brands with a section of their website labelled “Canadian Made” to inspire shoppers to support their neighbours. Big box, mainstream marketplaces like may offer bedding styles that are similar, but their quality and commitment to Canadian made goods is not the same.

Mediterranean Market – 1570 Gordon Dr.

The perfect gift for your savoury loving friend.

With two locations in both Kelowna & Vernon, Mediterranean Market is the ideal marketplace for high quality ingredients in your Christmas meals. Specializing in Italian, Mediterranean, and European foods there is a wide selection of truffle oils, sauces, meats, cheeses, desserts, pastas, and curated goods.

If one of your holiday traditions is enjoying a charcuterie board with wine before dinner, Mediterranean Market has a vast choice of delicious meats, cheeses, jelly’s, crackers, and mustards to accompany the board. With weekly specials on meats and cheeses, they also make fresh award-winning sandwiches in store.

Meats and cheeses can be pricey at most places, but Mediterranean Market’s pricing is reasonable with a guaranteed freshness when employees slice its products in front of customers. At some of the largest supermarkets, you’re never exactly sure of how long the meats and cheeses have sat in the display case. With staff members’ assistance at Mediterranean Market you can shop exact amounts for ingredients rather than paying for large amounts of niche items that won’t be used after the holidays.

Okanagan Candle Co. Workshops – 1195 Richter Street #104

Create cozy vibes this holiday season with clean, safe, mood inducing lighting.

Okanagan Candle Co. hand pours their candles in small batches with 100 per cent soy wax and natural cotton wicks. Unlike mainstream brands, the candles are scented with non-toxic fragrance oil blends and burned clean with no toxins, paraffins, or phthalates.

Joining the sustainability movement, the company also offers the option to bring in your own vessel and refill it with their 100 per cent soy wax blend for a more sustainable and eco conscious option. Workshops are also offered where you can choose from over 40 different fragrance oils, mix them, and create a personally unique candle. After the workshop everyone will take home one 16 oz candle and receive 20 per cent off all Okanagan Candle co products from the retail store.

A 10 oz candle from Okanagan Candle Co. has a 35+ hour burn time and priced at $28. While other mainstream candle shops that don’t make their products in Kelowna, might have larger candles at a similar price, a higher burn time is not guaranteed

Okanagan Candle Co. makes a cleaner, longer lasting candle.

Priest Creek Winery – 2555 Saucier Road

If you’re buying wine, might as well make it local.

It’s easy to grab any bottle of wine at the liquor store, but this year supporting local winemakers is how the industry grows and an aspect of tourism stays present in the Okanagan.

Darren and Jane Sawin purchased what’s now Priest Creek Winery as an estate vineyard in 2015, wanting to share their farming roots with their children.

Darren then began his winemaking journey by working with support from Jason Parkes Customs and through classes at Washington State University.

The winery is unique because it utilizes methods in specialized yeasts, non-interventionist techniques and employs 100 per cent gravity flow where Darren is now the leading winemaker.

For the holiday season, the winery is offering over 10 different gift basket options while still having individual wines for purchase.
