A Kelowna-based steel manufacturer just got a boost from the federal Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure.

MAKR has received an investment of $2.5 million from Pacific Economic Development Canada (PacifiCan).

“British Columbia’s manufacturing sector is a key driver of innovation, job creation, and economic growth. With this investment, PacifiCan is helping local businesses scale up and contribute to one strong Canadian economy—building prosperity in B.C. and across the country,” said Minister of Housing and Infrstructure responsible for PacifiCan Gregor Robertson.

The business designs and manufactures steel parts for spray parks and splash pads around the world. The number of these spaces is expected to rise over the coming years, with construction investment anticipated to reach $5 billion.

Funds received will assist MAKR in implementing an ‘Industrial Internet of Things’ system, which will connect smart manufacturing machines to the web using sensors. The new system offers real-time communications on operational status.

“PacifiCan’s investment is a powerful vote of confidence in MAKR Group, our people, and advanced manufacturing in Kelowna,” said MAKR president and owner Jill White. “This funding will allow us to accelerate innovation in our shop, strengthen our global competitiveness, and create high-quality jobs locally, while advancing our purpose of connecting communities around the world through play and social experiences.”

The repayable funding comes from PacifiCan’s Business Scale-up and Productivity Program.
