The next phase of construction work on a $5.5 million infrastructure project will soon bring new traffic changes to Penticton’s Eckhardt Avenue.
Starting Monday, Feb. 16, crews will resume construction that includes installation of curb-level bike lanes, continuous sidewalks, stormwater upgrades, and fire hydrant spacing improvements near Penticton Secondary School.
The raised bike lanes (sidewalk level) will run along the corridor and create connectiviy between the existing Government Street lanes, KVR Trail and lake-to-lake route, according to the city.
City officials also noted that the project will see the addition of “traffic safety improvements,” including a flashing crosswalk beacon at Ellis Street.
Access to Eckhardt Avenue off Main Street will be closed, with traffic detours put in place, as a result.
The closure is needed “to allow for excavation and large equipment to upgrade water, storm and electrical infrastructure,” the city said in a media release.
Vehicles driving down Main Street will not be able to turn onto Eckhardt Avenue during this time.
If driving to Penticton Secondary School, access will only be available via Van Horne Street during this time.
“Slow down, take extra caution and follow the signs, traffic flaggers and pavement markings within the school parking lot area,” the city said. “When leaving the school, drivers should again take extra caution, watch the signage and leave via Braid Street.”
The city is reminding people that businesses in the area remain open as usual, and access to 360 Learning Academy will also be available from the high school, with a temporary pedestrian walkway in place out front.
Infrastructure work in the area kicked off earlier in 2025.
The first phase of work also included new paving and line painting.
Its expected completion is fall 2026.
