The second day of the Winter Olympics in Milano Cortana coincided with the second day of the 2026 Vernon Winter Carnival.

And judging by the 65th annual Vernon Winter Carnival Parade, which marched down 27th Street Saturday, Feb. 7, it was hard to tell which big event Vernonites were more excited about.

The theme of this year’s Carnival is Team Carnival: Canada Goes for Gold, and accordingly, most of the entries in this year’s parade sported Olympic looks and designs.

The Olympic rings were well-represented, as were a number of Olympic sports. Gold was the colour of the day, with plenty of floats making ample use of the colour that Canadian athletes will be chasing for the next couple of weeks.

The Winter Carnival Parade is always fun for the whole family, and scores of families came out with kids eager to collect a haul of candy as they watched the floats and decked-out vehicles go by. The skies were cloudy, but not too cloudy to see a synchronized airplane flyover above the parade route.

Winter seems to have forgotten to arrive for this year’s Winter Carnival; there was rain, not snow, in the forecast Saturday. But fortunately, the rain mostly held off and allowed parade-goers to enjoy the day.

For those who had the chance to catch the parade, there will be an opportunity to vote for their favourite entry. The Overall Parade Spirit award will be decided by the public online after the parade.
