The West Kelowna Warriors edged a 4-3 victory over the Spruce Grove Saints during a shootout on Saturday, March 7.
At the 12:35 mark of the second period, the game may have looked over for fans watching at the Royal LePage Place. Josh Polak had just scored the third goal of the game for Spruce Grove and West Kelowna had not had the chance to get on the score sheet.
Though soon after, the Warriors would be able to live up to their namesake.
Jace Rask scored at 17:46 to give the Warriors something to work with. They would find the back of the net again in the third period, as Ruslan Jamaldinov scored at 8:26.
As time ticked down, and the Warriors down by one goal, goalie Angelo Zol was taken off at the 17:39 mark of the third.
The gamble would pay off.
Oliver Chan scored just over 10 seconds later at 17:51 to tie the game for the Warriors.
West Kelowna’s strong mentality would carry them through the shootout.
Nathan Ethier and Jamaldinov were able to score the winning goals in the shootout, as the Saints were only able to score one goal.
The Warriors remain on top of the Interior West division of the BCHL with 74 points and a record of 36-9-2-0. The team has clinched their division.
On March 13, they play on the road against the Sherwood Park.
