The Kelowna Regional Transit System (KRTS) is getting a piece of $248.5 million in funding from the federal and provincial governments and BC Transit.

Approximately $8.2 million will upgrade the existing Kelowna Transit Centre on Hardy Street, including component replacement, fleet parking restructuring, and safety, security, and amenity enhancements.

Another $2.9 million will help develop a design plan and complete public engagement activities for a new operations and maintenance facility to be located south of UBC Okanagan.

The facility upgrades in Kelowna align with BC Transit’s plan to electrify its fleet by 2040 and CleanBC emissions reduction goals, according to a news release by the federal government.

“This funding will help transition to buses that use cleaner power sources, upgrade bus stop shelters, carry out critical maintenance activities, and ensure that our transit exchanges are modern and efficient to accommodate future growth,” said B.C. Transportation Minister Rob Fleming.
