City of Kelowna staff as well as the Kelowna Fire Department are still in the process of assessing the wildfire on Knox Mountain that sparked on Canada Day.

As a result, the mountain, as well as the dog park and the road towards Paul’s Tomb are closed as it is not yet safe to fully open the park to the public.

Despite the fire no longer being active, parks staff say that there are still hazards to the public.

“There are hotspots, and wildfire risk in the park is still high. It’s really important that people abide by the closure notice. Unfortunately, the public are still entering the park and there have been close calls between firefighters and individuals ignoring the closure,” said Tara Bergeson, urban forestry supervisor.

Mitigation is being done to ensure there is no risk of a flair-up. Assessments will be done on a day-to-day basis as to when the park can reopen.

Failure to comply with the orders to stay out could result in a fine of $500.
